Cybersecurity is National Security ...
The impact of cybersecurity activities goes beyond the networks and devices that IT professionals support. Their work enables the lives and livelihoods of almost everyone in America, and it helps protect the economy, defense, and other interests of the United States and its citizens. This discussion will focus on how IT professionals' contribute to national security ... whether they know it or not! -

Beyond the Screen: Fortifying the Human Firewall Against Social Engineering ...
As cyber threats evolve, the frontline of digital security is no longer confined to firewalls and encryption algorithms alone. Today, one of the most significant vulnerabilities exists not within our hardware or software, but within ourselves: the human element. Social engineering attacks, which manipulate individuals into divulging confidential information or performing actions that compromise security, have become increasingly sophisticated and frequent. This talk aims to demystify the psychological tactics behind social engineering, highlighting real-world scenarios where human vulnerabilities were exploited and the profound impacts on individuals and organizations. We'll explore how social engineering transcends traditional cybersecurity boundaries, requiring a comprehensive approach that includes technology, psychology, and more importantly, mindset. -

How to Build and Run Your Own Algo Trading and Lose All Your Money ...
Data scientists believe they can do anything so why not try our hand at algorithmic trading? This year, we're taking the GitHub Actions knowledge from last year's talk to the next level, using it to collect daily data, make decisions, and execute trades on a few select tickers—with a high chance of a spectacular financial faceplant. -

Unlocking more than Hype: Creation of Expert Systems with Generative AI and Retrieval Augmented Generation ...
For many years, the field of analytics has been pulling information out of databases and turning it into valuable insight. What has remained elusive is how to deliver the same type of value that is locked away in our vast unstructured stores of documents, presentations, and manuals. We will discuss the why and how of generating this value with AI tools. In addition to what makes up a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system, we will cover the curation of your sources, enriching and expanding the data, and ingesting those sources into GenAI friendly storage. And then finally adding context and tuning your generative AI results to deliver meaning and insight for your customers. -

Is it a Rock? Challenges in Ontology Engineering ...
In an age of pervasive LLM and generative AI utilization, several examples of systems using these approaches provide answers to prompts that are less than correct. What is accurate when I ask, "What is a rock"? How do I know that it knows what a rock is? This talk engages with the challenges associated with ontology engineering and reasoning in knowledge systems. We will discuss tools, data, models, top-level ontologies, and knowledge systems to expose persistent ontological and methodological issues in building effective knowledge systems. A demonstration of a rock will be provided. -

Beyond the Hype: Real-World Use Cases for AI in Shiny ...
The bots aren’t taking over (yet). Despite the recent publicity around ChatGPT and sensationalist predictions that followed, AI, GPTs and LLMs aren’t quite ready to replace humans. However, they are valuable tools that assist and streamline human work, serving as guides to enhance productivity and decision-making. In this session, Tanya will help navigate the hype around these tools, highlighting real-world examples of AI implementations in Shiny that are having a positive impact on organizations and professionals in the data space: -AI-guided drug discovery -Intelligent categorization and exploration of unstructured data with LLMs -Productivity enhancements for coding and documentation with GPTs Tanya will review best practices to identify limitations of AI, GPTs and LLMs and avoid implementation issues. She’ll also cover the power of Shiny in delivering consumable AI solutions to non-technical end users. -

Unraveling Tumor Heterogeneity with Spatial ‘Omics ...
Cancer is not a homogenous disease. Tumors exhibit remarkable heterogeneity at the molecular level, posing significant challenges for effective treatments. Understanding this heterogeneity is paramount for advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes. By dissecting the spatial organization of genes, proteins, and metabolites within tumors, we can gain unprecedented insights into cancer biology and therapeutic response. I will show how we are using spatial 'omics' technologies to profile tumors, and I will discuss some of the challenges that come with analyzing big biological data. -

Lessons in MLOps ...
Machine learning operations, or MLOps, are a set of practices to deploy and maintain machine learning models in production reliably and efficiently. MLOps practices sit at the intersection of data scientist and software engineer skills, making it difficult to understand when, why, or who should take on these tasks. This talk demystifies MLOps, focusing on practical workflows that can be implemented to create better models. -
